Upcoming General Meeting at the UST Houston will celebrate the 25 years of ICUSTA

April 2019

The culmination of ICUSTA’s 25th Anniversary Celebration will take place this May during the 14th Biennial Conference at the University of St. Thomas, Houston.

In fact, the University of St. Thomas, founded in 1947 by Basilian Fathers and located in the Montrose neighborhood, has already hosted another ICUSTA Conference in 1995. That one was the second meeting after the founding of the Council of Universities inspired by St. Thomas Aquinas and the first actual international conference. For that reason, the UST Houston is the perfect place for concluding the celebrations of ICUSTA’s “silver wedding” anniversary.

The 2019 ICUSTA Biennial Conference will take place from Wednesday, May 22 to Friday, May 24. Every two years ICUSTA members meet in different countries in order to strengthen personal and institutional links, review aims and agreements, and share new initiatives. In these general meetings the Presidents take part in an Assembly of Delegates, in which the new officers are elected and other important decisions are made.  For their part, the Heads of International Offices and the Honor Council’s members meet in their respective groups in order to review the period and to propose new activities. An outstanding keynote speaker and other special guests are invited as well.

The general theme for the 14th Biennial will be “Thomism As Culture”. This guiding meditation for the three-day Conference will focus particularly on how our activities at the University reflect and advocate the values of Thomism and how we share them with the rest of society. The organizers look forward to an active participation and a sharing of experiences throughout the Conference. The three panels on May 23 will address issues related to: Institutional Experiences on Faith and Culture, Ongoing ICUSTA Initiatives, and New Joint Projects. In addition, a new contest for the funding of Solidarity Projects will be announced.

Dr. Richard L. Ludwick, President of the University of St. Thomas and current ICUSTA President has expressed:

“We look forward to receiving you in our city of many names, ‘Space City’, ‘H-Town’, and the ‘Energy Capital of the World’.  The 2019 conference marks a wonderful opportunity to celebrate ICUSTA’s 25th Anniversary, deepen our identity as Catholic universities founded in the spirit of St. Thomas Aquinas, and strengthen cooperation among all member universities.”
